OMEGA: A PIONEERING FORNCE IN GLOBAL REFRIGERATION FROM SOUTH AFRICA
The combination of two like-minded individuals in Michael Breckle and Derek Higgs was the catalyst for the creation of a company dedicated to tackling the difficulties experienced within the refrigeration industry in South Africa and globally. Omega Refrigeration was founded in 2009 by these two extensively experienced refrigeration experts, and their unique approach to industry challenges ensured the successful growth of the business through cutting edge technology in improving refrigeration systems and processes.
With the expanding focus on energy efficiency and the green revolution taking hold of the world, business owners and private individuals have become increasingly aware of the need to conserve power. Refrigeration is responsible for the largest consumption of electricity in supermarkets, accounting for 40% of the electricity used in such stores, with some of the older more inefficient systems culpable of consuming up to 60%.
With this challenge in mind, the founders of Omega Refrigeration became determined to realise the key objective of creating a refrigeration system which could effectively cater for the need to save power, and reduce maintenance costs, without compromising the effectiveness and quality of the refrigeration itself. Relying on more than 75 years of combined experience developing and manufacturing refrigeration for the South African market, Breckle and Higgs established the company to create an efficient and functional refrigeration cabinet and system combination that would have the potential to revolutionise the industry on a global scale.
By combining technologies from secondary refrigeration systems and their own designs, Breckle and Higgs developed the water assisted Hybrid Cooling Tower, which was a revelation for higher ambient conditions. This was a crucial first step, and the cooling method involved proved to be the building block that led to the development of the original self-contained water-loop system, which was proudly pioneered by Omega Refrigeration. This system essentially combined remote refrigeration with a secondary refrigeration water cooling system, to achieve incredible refrigeration efficiencies which are unmatched by any conventional refrigeration systems.
The founding principles of the company hinged on refrigeration efficiency as a main focus, and this continues to be the case, because working to achieve that goal has allowed Omega to gain a competitive edge over all of their competitors. Omega was the first company to produce a system so advanced and well developed that refrigeration technology leaders globally took notice.
As the pioneers of this impressive refrigeration tech, Omega Refrigeration are the sole installers and manufacturers of water-loop cooling technology, and have continued to make massive advances in cabinet technology to develop a display cabinet with almost zero spill-over, and a temperature stability of one degree Celsius over a 24-hour period.
Omega’s founders understood the need to improve both the system and cabinet side of the refrigeration industry and continued to work to increase benefits as far as installation and maintenance was concerned. The self-contained refrigeration system eliminates the need for long refrigeration piping systems, while effectively reducing the volume of refrigerant required by up to 80%. The cabinet refrigeration system is constructed from modular components, which means that repairing or replacing parts, including a faulty compressor is a simple process.
Omega Refrigeration’s internationally recognised water-loop system is a giant leap forward in refrigeration technology, thanks to the innovative and ground-breaking work of the company founders.
Derek Higgs has since retired, but his invaluable experience is ever-present in the countless businesses that have been assisted and supported through Omega’s original self-contained water-loop system. The Omega CEO, Michael Breckle and the Omega Team continue to lead the company into the future with a clear and concise vision.
In staying true to the founding principles of the business, the technology developed by Omega Refrigeration and their supply partners continues to improve the retail food business on both a local and international level, and if one thing is certain, it is the fact that Omega will continue to lead the way towards improved refrigeration technologies through ceaseless research and development.
